ST1ENTRY.TXT STORM1 ENTRY, Shareware Version 1.02, August 2, 1987 The purpose of this program is to allow an input file for STORM1, one of the programs on the APWA CESTORM diskette, to be quickly created without constant reference to the manual. The program prompts for required information with some error-checking capabilities such as data type (alpha, numeric, etc.) and range of values (Manning's "n" between 0 and 1, etc.). Also, some cross-checking of variables takes place. The data must be well organized, as no editing of previous entries is allowed, other than the current data line, via a "Q" command. At the end of this document is a data entry form which can be filled out to speed keyboard entry. If printed output is desired, select the proper choice when prompted. Printed output is formatted for readability and not so you can check field lengths and locations, so don't bother checking formatting on the printout. STORM1 has a bug when the option to list input data is used. The decimal portion of the values do not print, making this option useless. Fortunately, the above mentioned printed output of ST1ENTRY provides very good documentation of the input file. ST1ENTRY allows the user to create intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) files for particular areas, then add pipeline data at a later time. If the file name chosen by the user for the IDF file reflects the location and storm intensity, and has an extension of .IDF, it can easily be located and used for other storm drain designs in the area. For example, you might name a file that has intensity-duration data for a 10 year storm in the city of Watsonville "WAT-10.IDF". Another file for the city of Salinas for a 20 year storm would be named "SAL-20.IDF". The IDF file created is simply the first lines of the input file described in the STORM1 manual, without the pipeline data. A program option at the main menu allows you to later retrieve the appropriate IDF file and append pipeline data to it, and save it as an input file with another name, to be read by STORM1. The separate IDF file concept is an enhancement within ST1ENTRY, not an option of STORM1, and the IDF file is not usable within STORM1 until pipeline data has been appended to it by ST1ENTRY. ST1ENTRY will prompt before overwriting a file. Once you are past this point in the program, the file will be created, even if you abort the program, so be sure overwriting is okay before choosing yes. The program can be aborted at any time by pressing Control-Break. If any users of STORM2 or STORM3 would like an ST2ENTRY or ST3ENTRY program, let me know. I have considered writing them, but because I do not use STORM2 or STORM3, they have a low priority on my list of things to do. Following is an explanation of the files on this diskette: ST1ENTRY.EXE The data entry program for STORM1 ST1ENTRY.TXT Documentation for ST1ENTRY (what you're reading) STR.BAT A batch file for printing out STORM1 output files ("STorm1 Report"), which uses CONDENSE.BAS to send Epson control codes to the printer for a left margin and condensed print, and PRINTOUT.EXE to actually print the file, and RESETPRN.BAS to form feed and reset the printer to draft mode. If you don't have an Epson compatible printer, the BASIC programs are easy to modify with the appropriate codes. To print out a report from a STORM1 output file, just type "str" and follow the prompts. CONDENSE.BAS Read explanation for STR.BAT. PRINTOUT.EXE Read explanation for STR.BAT. RESETPRN.BAS Read explanation for STR.BAT. MAIL SUPPORT I intend to respond in a timely fashion to all requests, comments, and questions from registered users. I welcome comments from unregistered users also, as that is another way I will know how to improve the program. Unregistered users may or may not get a response, however. If you are undecided about registration because of the limitations of this version, let me know, and if possible I will add the enhancements you want and send you the upgraded shareware version for your review. I will request a $10 handling charge before sending it out, however. If any registered user uncovers a fatal bug in ST1ENTRY, I will send a fixed version free. The latest shareware version will always be available for $10. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION SD1ENTRY will run on any MS-DOS compatible machine with 256K RAM and DOS 2.11 or later. It will create the data file on the drive and subdirectory the program is located within. It will work from a hard disk or floppy drive. REGISTRATION This program is shareware, which means you are free to copy and distribute it as described within the beginning screen message. Sending a contribution of $15 to the author constitutes registration and will result in the following benefits to the user: 1. Receipt of a diskette with the latest version of SD1ENTRY, without the shareware entrance screen. 2. Full support (by mail) of all questions regarding use of SD1ENTRY and STORM1. In writing and testing this program I have become familiar with some of STORM1's idiosyncrasies. 3. Placement on a mailing list for notification of availability of future enhanced versions, which will be available for $10.
